Protecting Your Child’s Teeth During Sports

It’s startling to learn that it costs parents around 20x more money to repair a tooth damaged during sports versus the cost of a mouthguard and to remind your child to wear it! In addition to pricey dental emergencies, prematurely losing a baby tooth can cause spacing problems, likely requiring braces in the future.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry has reported that there are around seven million dental injuries to young athletes, and the National Sports Safety Foundation reports three million teeth lost during youth sporting events annually!

A mouthguard is an invaluable piece of equipment when it comes to protecting your little athlete’s smile! Mouthguards can range in price between $10 - $150 depending on the type of mouthguard you’re looking for. Over-the-counter stock mouthguards come in different sizes and can be bitten into to create a mold. Vacuum formed mouthguards are made specifically for your child in our office.

In addition to mouthguards, helmets and pads have also been shown to prevent head injuries and teeth from being knocked out. This equipment will absorb the impact of hits and falls, reducing the risk of a concussion.

If your child has suffered a sports-related dental emergency, please call Little Smiles of Delaware today! Our pediatric dental office is located here in Delaware, Ohio.
