Spring Cleaning Dental Checkup for Your Children

2 Children playing ball outsideNow that spring has arrived, many of us know that it’s time to clean the house. However, spring cleaning doesn’t just pertain to your job or your house, it should also be part of your oral health routine. Regular preventative dental care for your visits consist of a checkup and exam as well as a dental cleaning. However, as many as 1/3rd of American kids don’t make these visits.

Spring Cleaning Dental Checkup

There are many reasons why scheduling your child’s dental visits around spring cleaning time can be beneficial. These benefits include:

  • Reduce plaque – During your child’s dental checkup, he or she will be given a thorough cleaning. During this cleaning, stubborn plaque or tartar will be removed from the tricky parts of the teeth that your child may have trouble keeping clean. If plaque isn’t properly removed, it can lead to dental cavities, tooth decay, gum disease, and discoloration.
  • Detect problems early – Because so many dental diseases are painless in the early stages, it’s crucial to catch these problems early on before they progress and begin to cause pain.
  • Reverse gingivitis – If your child is suffering from the early stages of gum disease, you may notice that his or her gums are red, swollen, or bleed when they’re flossed or brushed. Preventative visits to the dentist can allow us to stop it from developing into periodontal disease and eventual bone or tooth loss.
  • Address halitosis – There are a number of causes of chronic bad breath that can be discussed with your child’s dentist. Dry mouth caused by medications, dehydration, or overproduction of bacteria can all cause bad breath. Discuss your concerns with your child’s dentist.
  • Help kids get used to the dentist – Lastly, the best way to help your child feel comfortable at the dentist’s office is to allow him or her to visit our office twice a year. Additionally, placing importance on your child’s dental health is a habit that he or she will carry into adulthood, meaning healthy teeth for life!

With so many benefits, there’s no excuse not to make an appointment for your children to receive a spring cleaning and a checkup here at Little Smiles of Delaware. For more information, please contact our Delaware, Ohio child’s dental office today.
