Pediatric Dental Fillings in Delaware, Ohio

Young girl smiling on a bicycleHere at Little Smiles of Delaware in Delaware, Ohio, we offer a couple different types of dental fillings to our pediatric patients. As a parent, you may have questions or concerns about the benefits and drawbacks of the types of fillings we offer.

Amalgam Fillings

Most people are familiar with amalgam fillings as the most common type of dental filling. Amalgam fillings are silver and usually found on top of the teeth, especially back molars. Amalgam fillings have been popular for over a hundred years and are made up of silver, zinc, tin, copper, and mercury. There are a few advantages of amalgam fillings, which include:

  • Amalgam fillings harden quickly, making them an ideal solution for areas that are difficult to keep dry during treatment
  • Placing amalgam fillings is a quick procedure, ideal for children or those with special needs who have a difficult time stay still for too long
  • Lastly, amalgam fillings are very durable and are the best choice for covering large dental cavities, such as cavities on molars

While many parents are concerned about the mercury content in amalgam fillings, please rest assured that, when combined with other metals, the mercury helps to form a safe and stable dental filling.

Composite Resin Fillings

Here at Little Smiles of Delaware, we also have mercury-free, resin-based composite fillings for treating dental cavities. Composite resin fillings are white and made from powdered glass mixed with plastic. This type of filling is durable and made to blend in better with the color of your child’s teeth. Below are a few other benefits of composite resin fillings:

  • Less of your child’s tooth needs to be filed down with resin fillings
  • Blends in with the color of your child’s teeth
  • BPA-free materials

If your child needs a dental filling or if you have concerns about your child’s current dental fillings, please contact Little Smiles of Delaware. Our pediatric dental office is located here in Delaware, Ohio.
