Dental Fillings for Kids

If you are on the fence about visiting a pediatric dentist in Columbus to discuss dental fillings for your kid, know they are necessary. If your kid has a cavity, they help stop the spread of infection, making the whole episode less painful.

Following are four types of dental fillings suitable for kids:

Amalgam Fillings

Also known as silver fillings, these are made of a mixture of metals, including mercury, silver, tin, and copper.

They are durable and can withstand the onslaught of chewing, making them suitable for back baby and adult teeth. They are also a more cost-effective solution compared to other fillings. You might be concerned about the use of mercury in amalgam fillings and whether it is safe for your kid, but the American Dental Association (ADA) has given them their seal of approval.

Composite Resin Fillings

Also known as white fillings, these are made of a mixture of finely ground glass particles and plastic resin. They bond directly to the tooth, supporting the remaining tooth structure.

One of the best things about composite fillings is that they can be matched to your tooth’s color, providing a more natural appearance.

They are less durable than amalgam, making them more suitable for smaller cavities.

Glass Ionomer Fillings

Also known as man-made dentin, these fillings are made of glass and acrylic.

They release fluoride, preventing further tooth decay, and are often used for non-load-bearing areas and baby teeth.

Glass ionomer fillings are less durable than composite or amalgam, which is why they might need to be replaced frequently.

Ceramic Fillings

Also known as porcelain fillings, these are made of biocompatible ceramic materials and can be customized to match the shape and color of your kid’s teeth.

They are stain-resistant, making them an expensive option. Since ceramic fillings don’t last long, they are not a good option for little kids.

When considering a filling option for your kid, consult a pediatric dentist in Columbus. They will assess your child's specific needs and discuss the advantages of each filling type to help you make an informed decision. Remember, good oral hygiene practices and regular dental check-ups are necessary to maintain dental fillings.
