Headgear is any type of orthodontic appliance that may strap around the head in order to exert additional pressure onto the teeth. Not everyone who undergoes orthodontic treatment will end up needing headgear, but it is an important part of certain treatment plans and can have many benefits.
Below are some ways in which orthodontic headgear can benefit patients:
Most parents may become concerned about teasing and abuse if their child needs headgear as part of the treatment plan. Rest at ease; often, orthodontic headgear needs only to be worn for 8+ hours a day. In most cases, you and your orthodontist can work together to create a schedule that will allow your child to wear their headgear at home. Keep in mind that you must strictly adhere to the plan you and your orthodontist create to ensure optimal results.
While orthodontic headgear isn’t necessary for all cases of treatment, both adults and children can benefit from it in certain situations. With the help of headgear, your treatment will be over relatively quickly!
